New research suggests that circular RNA transcripts are not as rare as previously thought.
Although previous work identified isolated examples of circular forms of RNA, a new study in PLoS ONE shows that the molecule assumes this shape much more than previously thought. By surveying the full RNA complement of several human cell types for alternative splice variants, researchers at Stanford University identified a significant portion of these are not linear, but circular.

; Associate Clinical Professor of Medicine, University of California, San Francisco. SAN DIEGO -- Lung cancer in nonsmokers has distinct mutation patterns that might provide clues into the origin and pathogenesis of the disease, ongoing laboratory studies have suggested. Tumors from patients who had never smoked had fewer alterations in genes commonly associated with lung cancer, such as EGFR , KRAS , and EML/ALK translocations. Certain other mutations were common to nonsmokers, former smokers, and current smokers. Additionally, the types of mutations differed between early-stage and late-stage cancer in nonsmokers, according to a presentation here at the AACR-IASLC Joint Conference on the Molecular Origins of Lung Cancer.

For those who don’t know boxing, there are three ways a fight ends. The first is a clear knockout, the second is by vote of ringside judges and the third is when the referee in the ring ends the fight. This last one is known as a technical knockout - or TKO for short. I’m no boxing expert, but the boxing analogy is especially apt for this year’s Consumer Electronics Show (CES) in Las Vegas because there was a live boxing match inside one of the exhibit halls complete with a full size ring, stadium seating and real fighters. I didn’t attend the match, but what I saw at CES was in many ways the equivalent of a TKO by an electronic device specifically for healthcare. Hardened CES vets like Dan Costa (Executive Editor of PC-Mag.com) said it was “the “coolest thing” he saw - for the entire show.

(Ivanhoe Newswire) - Deafness affects 2 to 4 of every 1,000 people within the United States alone.
A gene known as FGF20, located in a portion of the genome has been associated with inherited deafness in otherwise healthy families, but new clues found in mice may lead to a solution in human deafness.
